Before taking state office, Dave played a pivotal role in shaping higher education governance in North Carolina during his tenure on the UNC Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, where he served as Board Chairman:

Eliminating Operating Deficits: Spearheaded key efforts to balance UNC Chapel Hill's operational budget and put the university back on solid financial footing.
Institutional Accountability: Established the Board of Trustees’ first dedicated Audit and Risk Committee to oversee fiscal transparency and governance.
Academic Freedom & Renewal: Supported structural initiatives aimed at expanding viewpoint diversity and conservative academic thought on campus, including advocating for the creation of UNC’s School of Civic Life and Leadership.

Dave will reflect on his time leading UNC Chapel Hill's board, his vision for higher education accountability, and how those experiences inform his current work as State Auditor.
