How will my donation be spent?
CLC depends upon donations from members and visitors to Chocorua Lake to fund most annual expenses:

  • Maintenance of almost one mile of publicly accessible shoreline at Chocorua Lake to reduce erosion and prevent sediment runoff into the lake. A twice-daily, seven-day-a-week, litter patrol to keep the Grove, Island and other CLC-owned public access areas free of trash from May through October.
  • Public toilets in all three CLC public lake access areas for thousands of visitors from late May to late October.
  • Regular monitoring and analysis of the water quality in Chocorua Lake. The resulting data is added to 43 years of water quality data, enabling CLC to track long-term trends and identify any negative impacts on water quality.
  • Care of 800 acres of conservation land and trails in the Chocorua Lake Basin owned by Chocorua Lake Conservancy.
  • Monitoring and protection of 2,500 additional acres in the Chocorua Lake Basin through covenants and easements held by CLC.
  • Maintenance of six popular hiking trails on Mount Chocorua and Mount Paugus, including the Brook Trail, Hammond Trail, Weetamoo Trail, Beeline Trail and Old Paugus Trail.
  • Maintenance and periodic replacement of the historic wooden railings on the Narrows Bridge.
  • Maintenance and occasional repairs of the dam at the outlet from the Little Lake to the Chocorua River.
  • Enforcing the state motorboat ban that helps prevent invasive Eurasian milfoil from infesting Chocorua Lake.
  • Keeping the stretch of Route 16 alongside the lake free of billboards and trash
  • Recruiting volunteers to remove bittersweet, plants native fruiting shrubs
  • Stream restoration projects to restore native brook trout habitat in the Chocorua Lake Basin.
  • Educational events for the public to increase their understanding of the natural world, how ecosystems function, and why conservation efforts are critical to enhance and protect them. In 2023, over 1,400 people attended CLC events.
  • Professional staff to plan and manage all this work.
  • Services of local contractors.
