Shelby SafePet

The SafePet program was started in 2018 to remove pet ownership as a barrier for survivors of domestic violence in Alabama. SafePet is a no-cost program that provides pet lodging and care for the pets of domestic violence survivors who are fleeing their situations.

In 2023 we were able to expanded our service area from 7 counties to 20.

In addition to housing, SafePet can provide:

Veterinary care for pets with injuries and health conditions due to abuse
Forensic veterinary examinations to document abuse
Preventative care as needed for boarding/fostering
Supplies like pet food, crates, leashes and cat litter
Flea/Tick and Heartworm prevention
