Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma Virtual Beer Tasting Event

Beer Event October 2022

Thank you for your interest in the Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma Virtual Beer Tasting Event!

Join us as we wrap up 2022 with another Virtual Beer Tasting Event!  Back by popular demand, spend the evening with PCS as we taste seasonal brews from East End Brewery and share updates on sarcoma research and awareness.  This is an event you don’t want to miss!

How will this work?  An EVENT ticket to attend will include four craft beers (enough for two to taste) from East End Brewery, koozie, wristbands and snacks.

Volunteers will DELIVER event kits to your home within 20 miles of downtown Pittsburgh.  Anyone living outside of the delivery area can choose the SHIPPING option. We can only ship to addresses in Pennsylvania.  We will arrange to deliver beer to Erie, PA, and West Virginia University.  If you live outside of the shipping area, please contact us at info@pghcuresarcoma.org to see if we can make arrangements to get beer to your area.

Store your beer in the refrigerator until event night!  Then sit back in the comfort of your own home and join via Zoom for the VIRTUAL Beer Tasting, PCS updates and survivor stories. You will receive the Zoom link in the week prior to the event.

All proceeds benefit sarcoma awareness and research.  It’s a fun evening to support a great cause!

If you are unable to attend but would like to support our fundraising efforts, we welcome your donations.

Why support Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma?  As a volunteer led organization, we are best suited to make sure your donations fund sarcoma research and advocacy.  In 2021 we proudly granted a quarter of a million dollars - $250,000 - for research in the Pittsburgh area and beyond.  We are currently accepting grant applications to gift ANOTHER $250,000 in 2022!  Here is a list of the projects that began or continued in 2021 due to the dedication and generosity of our supporters:

  • $50,000 - Dr. Kurt Weiss - Musculoskeletal Oncology Laboratory in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to support the ongoing collection and maintenance of the tissue bank enabling research for all Pittsburgh sarcoma scientists.
  • $5,000 - Dr. Karen Schoedel - UPMC Presbyterian Anatomic Pathology to study the genetic makeup of wild type chondrosarcoma.
  • $35,000 - Dr. Melissa Burgess - UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to study the effectiveness of two immunostimulating drugs on selected sarcomas.
  • $35,000 - Dr. Sarah Taylor - Magee Women's Hospital to look at the immunologic makeup of leiomyosarcoma and how it relates to treatment.
  • $16,636 - Dr. Intini Giuseppe - University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine to investigate a unique breed of mouse allowing the study of metastatic osteosarcoma.
  • $35,000 - Dr. Brock Lindsey - West Virginia University Department of Orthopedics to look at nanotechnology for the delivery of therapy that stimulates the immune system.
  • $19,961 - Dr. Adam Olson - UPMC Shadyside Hospital to look at possible negative effects of radiation therapy.
  • $35,000 - Dr. Jessica Daley - Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to study modifying the immune system to improve the outcome of radiation therapy in Ewing's sarcoma.
  • $5,000 - Dr. Anette Duensing - UPMC Hillman Cancer Center as emergency funding for a study in jeopardy of not being able to continue.
  • $8,000 - Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute to support the establishment of a sarcoma research fund.
  • $5,403 - UPMC Hillman Cancer Center the balance of our grant proceeds to the Sarcoma Research Fund bringing our total support for this fund to $754,453 since 2012.

Event Hosts

Host #1

Anette Duensing, MD
Associate Professor, Department of Pathology
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

The Duensing Lab is a translational sarcoma research lab with the goal of identifying new therapeutic targets and therapies for bone and soft tissue sarcomas and bringing our lab findings into clinical practice for sarcoma patients. Many of our projects seek to “repurpose” drugs that are already FDA-approved for other cancers to expedite the process for sarcoma patients. The Duensing Lab focuses on chondrosarcomas (bone sarcomas that arise from cartilage) as well as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and leiomyosarcomas (LMS), both sarcomas of soft tissue.

Host #2

Scott Smith
Owner
East End Brewing Company

East End Brewing Company has been Pittsburgh's home for Fresh Local Beer since 2004! We're a Brewpub, and a distributing brewery, spreading our tasty beer, cider, and soda pop throughout Western Pennsylvania. Since 2021, we also have our own kitchen, East End Chewing, which cranks out thick-crust Sicilian style pizza and other perfect-with-beer items.

Did you know?

It's very difficult to find funding for rare cancers like sarcoma that don’t attract as much federal research dollars and private investment.  After our 2022 grants are awarded, Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma will be within $50,000 of granting $2,000,000 dollars for sarcoma awareness and research since 2011!
